We are frequently asked questions such as
"Why Llamas?", "What can you do with them?", and "Do they spit?".
Llamas have been considered "alternative
livestock" for many years and continue to grow in popularity because
they are such versatile animals. Some of the leading uses of llamas
include recreational packing, for fiber, driving/carting, 4H,
therapy animals, as guard animals to other livestock, showing for
performance and conformation, and as pets. Llamas are also
relatively easy to maintain, do not require as much space as horses,
and their padded feet are gentle on the environment.
Llamas will spit at each other as a normal
way of marking territory, and particularly when protecting their
food. Llamas typically do not spit at humans. However, some may when
they are extremely frightened, or if they have received little
training or improper handling by humans.
In general, llamas are very intelligent,
gentle, and curious animals. In many cases, a small child can lead a
llama around in complete safety and with ease. Please see our
